Becoming Certified

At MedCoach our in-depth certification training includes specimen integrity, regulatory compliance, best practice standards, courier-specific perspective on HIPAA (patient confidentiality), OSHA and how to use an Exposure Control Plan.

MEDICAL COURIER CERTIFICATION TRAINING

A medical courier is a delivery professional who transports various medical items between different facilities and is a vital member of the health care team. Our couriers are compliant with OSHA, IATA, TSA and HIPAA regulations. Each Courier are equipped with their own barcode scanners, GPS, mobile data/voice units, specimen transport coolers, spill kits and identification badges.


Our Certified Medical Courier course is available for all full time employees. The certification course covers medical courier safety, HIPPA, appropriate PPE, dry Ice handling, storage parameters and more. Eligibility Requirements Include:

  • A minimum of six months to one year of relevant experience
  • A valid driver's license with a clean driving record
  • Completion of a certified training program
  • Passing a written certification exam


  • General Medical Courier Certification: Covers basic knowledge and skills required for all medical courier roles.
  • Hazardous Materials Certification: Required for transporting dangerous goods, ensuring compliance with CDC and EPA regulations.
  • Controlled Substances Certification: Necessary for handling and transporting medications regulated under the Drug Enforcement Administration (DEA).
  • HIPAA Compliance Training: Ensures protection of patient information during transit.

Care must be taken to transport these specimens according to your our safety protocol, as well as federal, state, or local requirements. We train our couriers how to use a spill kit, and we explain the difference between Category A, Category B, and Exempt specimens.Whole blood, serum, and plasma

  • The principles of customer service excellence and the need for effective communication with customers, colleagues, and supervisors.
  • Select appropriate personal protective equipment (PPE).
  • Identify safe handling methods used during pickup, transport, and delivery of specimens.
  • Various types of specimens collected from patients.
  • The impact of temperature and light on certain specimens.
  • Safe handling and use of dry ice during specimen transport in a vehicle.
  • Potential hazards to include biohazards, chemical, and fire in both the hospital and vehicle setting.


HIPAA certification is mandatory. We want our customers to feel confident that their patients sensitive information is being protected. The HIPAA certification is used for implementing multiple safeguards in health care organizations to protect sensitive, personal health information. 


Violations include:

  • Employees disclosing confidential information
  • Medical record mishandling
  • Lost or stolen devices containing confidential patient information
  • Texting patient information
  • Posting patient photos on social media
  • Unauthorized access to patient files
  • A breach of patient information in a social setting
  • Releasing personal health information without the patient’s written consent
  • Leaving a computer screen left on with a patient’s information allowing an unauthorized person to access it
  • Employees or vendors who are not HIPAA compliant
